National Youth Science Forum

National Youth Science Forum

National Youth Science Forum

The National Youth Science Forum is a two-week program for senior secondary students who are thinking about a career in science, engineering and technology.

The forum is fully residential and takes place in January at the Australian National University in Canberra and Curtin University of Technology and The University of Western Australia in Perth. The costs include travel to and from Canberra or Perth. All activities are fully supervised by student staff and resident Rotary Counsellors. The program is extremely intensive with little time for outside activities except for meeting those people already in the program.

The most important aspect coming from the NYSF is a network of friends, colleagues and support groups throughout Australia which will be of value to participants for the whole of their lives.

Who can go?

Students moving into Year 12 who are serious about a career is science, engineering or technology.

What is the aim?

The NYSF helps students moving into Year 12, who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills. It also fosters discussion of, and interest in major national and global issues and emphasises the importance of maintaining continuing active interests in sport, arts and music.

The NYSF is a complicated mix of all things social, scientific and personal, and a portion of the Forum's activities are dedicated to each. Perhaps rather than science, as a specific idea or theology, it is better to think of the NYSF as being dedicated to those with an interest in science, engineering and technology. Because of that interest, the participants are very likely looking at a career in that area. As both an aid to selecting a career and to familiarise students with work that they may one day undertake, the program includes 8 half day visits to science or engineering establishments around Canberra.

How much does it cost?

The cost per applicant is about $2,300.00 Rotary Clubs traditionally support applicant with approximately ¾ of this cost.
